Glossary
Every word you meet in the hub, defined once, in alphabetical order.
What this is
The hub uses a small number of words over and over. This page defines each of them once.
Every other page in this handbook draws its vocabulary from here, so a word means the same thing wherever you meet it.
Terms
admin
Somebody who steers a group. An admin can open its settings and its treasury, promote and demote members, post jobs, create subgroups and moderate its feed.
agreement
A sentence you saved under Flow Planning. It says that when something happens, something else should follow, and it runs itself from then on.
assistant
The conversational helper under AI. It can act in Rivr for you, one confirmed action at a time.
badge
A mark a group issues to somebody, recording something they did or something they are trusted with.
ballot
One open question you can answer. Every proposal and every poll carries one.
bioregion
A region defined by nature rather than by borders. A watershed, an ecoregion or a cultural bioregion. Places sit inside them, and the map can draw their outlines.
booking
A claim on one of your offerings that carries a time slot. A claim with no time slot is an order instead.
bridge
A link between an outside messenger and your Rivr inbox. Once bridged, that network appears as its own tab under Messages.
claim
Putting your name on a job so that you are the one doing it.
connection
An account you hold elsewhere and have linked to Rivr, so the two can read from or write to each other.
document
A file you wrote or uploaded. Yours sit under Docs, and a group's sit in its vault.
event
A gathering with a time. People say whether they are going, and some events sell tickets.
federation
The way separate Rivr sites see each other. Your account lives on one of them and the others can work with you without a second sign-in.
feed
Any list of things in the hub. It scrolls inside its own panel and loads more as you reach the bottom.
gig
A piece of paid or volunteer work somebody has posted, listed under Gigs and claimable by whoever wants it.
Global Hub
A place hub with no place. It shows every place at once, and it is the front page for anyone not signed in.
group
A set of people who do something together. A household, an organization, a ring or a family. Each one has its own page of tabs.
hub page
A page built from panels you can move, resize, minimize, hide and bring back. Most pages in the hub are one.
instance
One Rivr site. There are many, they federate with each other, and your account is homed on one of them.
issue
Something raised inside a group for discussion, before anybody votes. It carries comments rather than votes.
job
A named piece of work with a description, a way of being paid, and a number of places for people to claim.
ledger
The running record of everything that has happened in Rivr. An agreement watches it and acts when what it is waiting for appears.
listing
Something offered for sale or for booking. Yours are managed under Listings and bought under Marketplace.
member
Somebody who belongs to a group. A member can read its members-only tabs, post in its feed, add to its market and use its chat.
membership
A paid tier on your own account. Which tier you hold decides whether you can create paid events, paid listings and organizations.
notification
A record that somebody did something involving you. They gather behind the bell in the bar at the top.
offering
Something you provide. A skill, a product, a service, a trip, a ticket, a voucher, data, a grant round, a gift or a bounty.
order
A claim on one of your offerings that carries no time slot. A claim with a time slot is a booking instead.
panel
One card on a hub page, answering one question. Panels are what a hub page is built from.
payout
Moving money out of a connected account and into your bank. One route takes a few days. The other is instant, where your account supports it.
persona
An alternate identity you can post under. It belongs to you and you switch to it and back from your own profile. The word is also used for a card of readings on a profile, which is a description rather than an identity.
place
A real area you can belong to. A town, a watershed, a bioregion or a council. Choosing one filters most of the hub.
place hub
The front page of one place, holding its local feed, a map of what is live, and where the place sits.
points
A record of contribution. Some jobs pay in points rather than in money.
poll
A question with a set of answers, raised inside a group. You answer it on that group's own page.
portal
A ring standing at a place in XR Earth. Walking through it puts you in a room another instance hosts.
press
A group's syndicated articles, news and media, gathered from the accounts it has connected.
project
A piece of work with jobs beneath it, a page of its own and a share of its group's money.
proposal
A yes or no question raised inside a group. You answer Yes, No or Abstain.
proxy
Your vote, handed to somebody you trust, for a named scope and for as long as you choose. You can take it back at any time.
quorum
The minimum turnout a decision needs. It is set by whoever raised the decision, not by Rivr.
receipt
The record of one purchase, with its status, its date, its totals and its payment details.
recording
A session recorded during an event, a project or a job. Recordings gather under Docs.
room
A small world an instance hosts, reached through a portal. Who may enter follows the room's own visibility.
saved
Something you bookmarked. Everything saved gathers on one page, sorted into categories for you.
scope
How much of a group's decision-making a proxy covers. Either the whole group, or one category of decision inside it.
shift
A claimed job's deadline, shown on your calendar alongside events and bookings.
sighting
A record that somebody saw a physical thing at a place and a time. The newest sighting is where the thing stands on the map.
stake
A share of a group's profit. Each group allocates it from its own contribution figures.
subgroup
A group that lives inside another group, with its own page, its own members and its own tabs.
tag
The sticker, code or number a physical thing is recognised by. NFC, QR, or typed.
Thanks
A token people give each other for something done. It is counted separately from money, and a voucher holds Thanks until it is redeemed.
thing
A real object Rivr knows about through its tag, with a page, a place and its sightings.
thread
One conversation inside Messages, between people or inside a group, a project or an event room.
treasury
A group's money, as opposed to yours. It sits behind the Treasury tab on a group's page and only its admins can see it.
view
How a list is drawn. Rows, cards or pictures.
visibility
Who can see something you made. It is set per thing, and the words differ between a post, a document, your profile and a group's tabs.
voucher
An offering that holds Thanks until it is redeemed. Claiming one holds the Thanks. Redeeming it releases them.
wallet
Your own money in Rivr, with its balances, its transactions and its payouts.
