Switching places
What actually changes on each page when you switch the place you are viewing in.
What this is
Switching places is a filter. It never moves you off the page you are reading.
This page lists what the filter reaches and what it does not.
What you see
The pill in the bar at the top always says which place you are viewing in, or All Locales.
When you switch, the page you are on redraws in place. Panels that hold local things get shorter or longer. Headings that name a place change to the new one.
The line above the title on several pages changes too. It reads the place's name when one is chosen, and a general phrase when none is.
What you can do here
- Watch a page change under the filter. See See what a switch changes.
- Take the filter off. See Widen back out.
How to
See what a switch changes
- Open Events under Manage.
- Read the count beside the Discover events panel.
- Press the pill in the bar at the top and choose a different place.
- Read the count again. The panel now holds that place's events.
Widen back out
- Press the pill in the bar at the top.
- Press All Locales.
- Every page now shows every place.
What changes for you
These pages follow your choice: Dashboard, Explore, Events, Groups, People, Voice and Gigs.
A place's own page does not. Neither does the Global Hub, which is every place by definition.
Messages, Wallet, Calendar, Saved and Settings are about you, not about a place, so the filter does not reach them.
On a place's own page the switcher both records your choice and takes you to the place you pick, because that page is addressed by one place. Everywhere else it only filters.
Your choice is remembered for a year. It survives closing the browser.
An older shared link that names a place in its address still selects that place, then drops it from the address bar, so a filtered view is never a separate link.
Where this connects
- Choosing your places is how to make the switch.
- A place hub is the one page addressed by a place rather than filtered by one.
- Finding things covers search, which is also scoped by your choice.
