Search

One field that looks across everything you are allowed to see, and a page of results you can narrow and share.

What this is

A single field, at the top of every page, that looks across the whole app at once: people, groups, places, listings, events, jobs, projects, posts and documents.

It searches only what you are allowed to see. A private group's contents, somebody else's private things and a members-only project are not in your results, whoever else can see them.

Typing a search takes you to its own page. It is not a menu and it is not a shortcut list.

What you see

The field sits in the top bar. Press the forward slash key from anywhere and your cursor lands in it.

Results fill the middle of the page, grouped by what kind of thing each one is, with a count beside each group. A group shows a few results and opens to show the rest.

The narrow panel sits on the left, along with the searches you ran recently and the ones you saved.

On the right, people, groups and places each get a panel of their own, so a person who matched is not buried in a list of documents. Below them, a map shows what matched near you.

Before you have typed anything the page is not empty. It shows what is worth looking at now, the same way a hub page does.

When nothing matches, the page says what it searched for and offers the same words again with your narrowing taken off.

How to

Search for something

1. Press the forward slash key, or click the field at the top of the page.
2. Type what you are looking for. Results begin to appear as you type.
3. Press Enter.

You land on the search page, and the words you typed stay in the field.

Narrow a search

1. Run a search.
2. In the Narrow panel on the left, choose a kind of thing, a place, a group, a tag, a price range or a date range.
3. The results cut down as you choose. Choose the same thing again to undo it.

Every choice you make becomes part of the page's address, so the narrowed search is a page in its own right.

Share a search, or come back to it

1. Run a search and narrow it however you like.
2. Copy the address of the page.
3. Send it to somebody, or keep it.

Opening that address again gives the same search, narrowing included. Somebody else opening it gets the same search against their permissions, so they see what they are allowed to see, not what you can.

Your recent searches are kept in the panel on the left, and you can save one there to keep it.

Jump to a page by keyboard

1. Hold Command and press K.
2. Start typing the name of a page.
3. Press Enter to go there.

This is the quick way between pages. It does not search your things; the field at the top does that.

What changes for you

You only ever see what you are allowed to see, and the same search gives different results to different people for that reason. Nothing is greyed out or shown as withheld: a thing you may not see is absent.

Signed out, you see what is public.

A place you have not joined still appears, because places are public. A private group does not.
