XR Earth
The Map's walkable version, on a phone or a headset, where you fly the whole planet, land, walk, and meet what is near you.
Where this lives: Home > Map
What this is
XR Earth is the Map you can stand in. The same globe, drawn with terrain and buildings, that you fly over, land on and walk through.
Everything on the Map is here too: events, groups, posts, offerings, the people who are nearby, portals into rooms, and physical things that carry a tag.
It works on a phone with your finger, and on a headset with your hands.
What you see
The planet, seen from space when you arrive. Below it, the place you last visited or your home, and the globe flies you there.
A small strip at the top tells you where you are, how high you are, and which view you are in.
A plus button opens the XR menu. Its items are Drop robot figurine, Nearby objects, Post a thing here, Scan a thing, Fly to a place, Fly home, World layers, Show my avatar nearby, Use XR headset or Use phone camera, My avatar, and Take off or Land here.
Three round buttons on the right: Return to me, Home, and a button that swaps first person and third person.
On a headset your hands are the controls. A palm turned up opens a menu of what to show: Everything, Posts, Events, Groups, People, Market and Things. Two cupped hands bring up the tools.
You have two bodies. One stands where your device really is. The other is the one you fly around in. When you fly away, the first stays behind, and you can see it from the air.
What you can do here
- Enter the walkable world from the Map. See Open XR Earth.
- Use it on a Quest or another headset. See Put on a headset.
- Travel by pointing your fists. See Fly with your hands.
- Move between your four views. See Change your view.
- Show only one group's things and people. See Choose a group channel.
- Step through a portal into a room. See Portals and rooms.
- Find a physical thing by its tag. See Physical things.
How to
Open XR Earth
- Open the Map under Home.
- Press the button marked XR above the globe.
- Wait for the ground to resolve. The strip at the top says when it has.
- On a phone, drag to move, pinch to fly higher or lower, and use two fingers to turn.
Put on a headset
- Open XR Earth in the headset's browser.
- Open the XR menu and choose Use XR headset. The Enter XR button at the bottom does the same.
- Look around so the headset recognises your room.
- Pinch and drag to move. Bring both hands together to zoom out a view, spread them to zoom in.
Fly with your hands
- Hold both fists out in front of you. You fly where they point.
- Keep your hands close together to go fast, or far apart to go slow.
- Turn both palms outward to brake, then to fly backwards.
- Open your hands to stop.
Your fists only fly once you have landed. On the way in from space they do nothing, and the strip at the top says so.
Change your view
- From inside your flying body, turn your right palm down and pinch twice quickly. You see yourself from behind and above.
- Pinch twice again to go back inside.
- Bring both hands together to zoom out from the world into your standing body, and once more to send your flying body out.
- Press Home to fly back to your standing body and drop into your real room.
Choose a group channel
- Open the XR menu and choose World layers.
- Under Group channel, choose a group, or Public world for everything.
- Close the panel. Only that group's things, portals and people remain.
What changes for you
Anyone can open XR Earth. Signing in adds your avatar, your groups, placing things, and stepping through portals as yourself.
With a group channel chosen, you see only what belongs to that group, and anything you place goes to that group.
A pinch with your palm facing you is the headset's own menu gesture, not Rivr's. If that menu opens, choose Resume, or pinch and hold with your palm facing you again to close it.
The headset remembers your room. Zooming in where you stand claims that spot as where you are, and your standing body appears there for others.
Your first flight measures your height, and your avatar takes it.
Your body comes from the gender you declare under Settings, next to Your 3D avatar: a male body, a female body, or a neutral one when you say nothing. It flies flat and fast when you move through the air and hangs in a held pose when you stop. An avatar you upload replaces it.
Where this connects
- The Map is the flat version of this world.
- Portals and rooms explains the rings you can walk through.
- Physical things explains the tagged things you can scan and find here.
- Who can see what decides which things appear to you.
