Who can see what

Visibility in Rivr is set per thing, and there are four different controls, each with its own words.

What this is

Everything you make carries its own answer to who can see it.

There is no single switch. There are four controls, in four places, and they use different words. This page names all four.

What you see

The first control is on the post composer and on the forms for an event, a project and a group. It is a button reading Visibility, followed by a short summary. With nothing chosen the summary reads Public. Opening it shows a line saying public means visible to everyone, then three sections where you name places, groups and people.

The second control sits beside it on the post composer. It is a Post as list, holding your own name and each group you steward. It appears only when you steward at least one group.

The third control is on a document. It is a section headed Visibility with five settings, and a section headed Shared with for naming individual people.

The fourth control is in Settings, on the Privacy tab, under Profile Tab Visibility. It has four settings and applies to each part of your profile.

A group has one more, under Group Settings, on the Tab Visibility tab. It also has four settings and applies to each of the group's tabs.

How to

Set who a post is for

1. Start a post.
2. Leave Show globally on for everyone to see it.
3. Switch Show globally off to narrow it.
4. Press the Visibility button.
5. Name the places, the groups and the people who should see it.
6. Publish.

With Show globally off and nothing named, the composer refuses and tells you to choose at least one place, group or person.

Post as a group

1. Start a post.
2. Find the Post as list. It appears only when you steward at least one group.
3. Choose the group.
4. Write and publish. The post goes out in the group's name.

You can post as yourself, or as a group you administer. You can never post as a place. A place is a scope, not a voice.

Set who a document is for

1. Open the document.
2. Find the section headed Visibility.
3. Choose one of the five settings. Public means anyone can find and view it. Locale means anyone in the same place. Members means members only. Private means you and the people you name. Hidden means it is kept out of listings and reached only by an explicit grant.
4. Use the section headed Shared with to name individual people or groups.

Set who each part of your profile is for

1. Open Settings under Account.
2. Press the Privacy tab.
3. Find the card headed Profile Tab Visibility.
4. Set each part to Public, Connections, Only Me or Hidden.
5. Save.

The parts you can set are About, Posts, Thanks, Events, Groups, Photos and Offerings.

What changes for you

Everything starts Public. You opt into restriction, never out of it by accident.

The four settings on a profile mean: Public is everyone; Connections is your connections only; Only Me is you; Hidden removes the part entirely.

A group's four settings mean: Public is everyone; Members is group members; Admin is group admins; Hidden removes the tab entirely.

Connections is a person's word and has no meaning for a group. Members and Admin are a group's words and have no meaning for a person. Each control offers only the words that apply.

A group's Treasury tab is removed for anyone who is not an admin, whatever its setting says.

Some pages are yours alone and cannot be shared at all. Your Wallet, your Saved list, your Calendar, your Docs, your Manage personas panel and your Membership panel are drawn only for you.

A private event never appears on a global, place or group feed.

Portals, rooms and physical things carry the same control as a post. A portal is seen by whoever its visibility names. A room is entered by whoever its visibility names on the instance hosting it, and by anyone at all when it is public. A thing is seen by whoever its visibility names, and moved only by the people who can change it.
