Joining and leaving a group

One button at the top of a group's page joins it, applies to it, or leaves it, and its wording tells you which.

What this is

Every group's page carries one button at the top right that handles joining and leaving.

Its wording changes with the group and with where you stand. Reading the wording tells you what will happen when you press it.

What you see

The button reads one of five things.

Join Group means the group is open. Pressing it makes you a member straight away.

Apply to Join means the group reviews applications. Pressing it opens a form.

Request Pending means you have already applied. The button is greyed out while you wait.

Invite Required means the group only takes people who arrive on an invite link.

Leave Group means you are already a member.

A group that asks for a password opens a small window for it as soon as a non-member lands on the page. The window is titled Access, followed by the group's name.

How to

Join an open group

1. Open the group.
2. Press Join Group at the top right.
3. You become a member at once. A note confirms you now have access.

Apply to a group that reviews applications

1. Open the group.
2. Press Apply to Join at the top right.
3. Read the instructions the group wrote for applicants.
4. Answer the questions. Required ones are marked with a star.
5. Enter the group password if one is asked for.
6. Press Submit application.
7. The button changes to Request Pending. An admin will answer.

Unlock a group that asks for a password

1. Open the group. A window opens asking for the password.
2. Type the password.
3. Press Unlock Access.
4. A green tick confirms you are now a member.

Press Cancel to close the window without joining.

Leave a group

1. Open the group.
2. Press Leave Group at the top right.
3. You leave at once. There is no confirmation step.

What changes for you

Pressing Invite Required without an invite tells you an invite link is needed and opens nothing.

An application can ask you for a password, for free-text answers, for a choice from a list, or for a tick box, depending on what the admin set up.

Leaving takes effect immediately and removes your access to the members-only tabs.

You can also join and leave from a group's card in Groups under Manage, without opening the group.
